Improving Seaweed Farming: Field lessons on Better Management Practices

Nur Ahyani, Aquaculture National Program Coordinator, WWF Indonesia, Indonesia

About the speaker:

Nur Ahyani is an aquaculture specialist with over ten years of experience in promoting sustainable farming practices across Indonesia. Beginning her career with seaweed and shrimp projects in Nias and Aceh, she has since focused on improving seaweed farming through the application of Better Management Practices (BMPs) and the Ecosystem Approach to Aquaculture (EAA). At WWF-

Indonesia, she leads the national aquaculture program covering multiple commodities, including seaweed, shrimp, and marine fish, supporting farmers toward sustainability. Nur holds a Master’s degree in Aquaculture from Ghent University, Belgium, and has received international training in responsible aquaculture development under the Netherlands Fellowship Program.

Company info:

WWF-Indonesia has been supporting the Government of Indonesia in the conservation and sustainable management of marine and fisheries resources through a formal partnership with the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (MMAF). This collaboration, renewed in October 2024 under a five-year Memorandum of Understanding (2024–2029), highlights WWF’s strong commitment to

promoting responsible fisheries and aquaculture nationwide. Since 2009, WWF-Indonesia has implemented the Seafood Savers Program, a market-based initiative encouraging sustainable seafood production and trade. Through Fisheries and Aquaculture

Improvement Projects (FIPs/AIPs), WWF supports producers in applying Better Management Practices (BMPs) and progressing toward Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) certification. Currently, 12 shrimp, fish, and seaweed supply chains are assisted toward ASC compliance, with five already ASC shrimp certified, representing over 57% of Indonesia ASC-certified shrimp production.

WWF-Indonesia also promotes sustainable seaweed farming within Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in Alor, Wakatobi, and Maluku Barat Daya. These initiatives focus on strengthening farmer group independence, improving environmentally responsible practices, and developing inclusive business models that support local livelihoods while protecting marine ecosystems.

Through these collective efforts, WWF-Indonesia continues to advance the transformation of Indonesia’s aquaculture sector toward greater sustainability and resilience.

Presentation:

This presentation shares key lessons learned from the implementation of Aquaculture Improvement Initiatives for seaweed farming under the Marine Protected Area (MPA) and the Seafood Savers Program. The initiatives aim to enhance the sustainability of seaweed production by promoting the adoption of Better Management Practices (BMPs) among local farming communities. The presentation will also highlight how WWF-Indonesia, in collaboration with local governments and partners, applied the Ecosystem Approach to Aquaculture (EAA) including carrying capacity assessments to ensure environmentally sound production.
